Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care 2003: 29(2) What is emergency contraception? Emergency contraception (EC) provides women with a safe means of preventing pregnancy following unprotected sexual intercourse (UPSI) or potential contraceptive failure.2–4 Alternative terms such as ‘postcoital contraception’ or the ‘morning-after pill’ are often confusing and ‘emergency contraception’ is the Faculty’s preferred term.
